Fergus Falls School - Comprehensive Weight Room Renovation

In 2023, the Fergus Falls School District embarked on a renovation of the Kennedy Secondary School (KSS) weight room, transforming it into a state-of-the-art training facility. The project was funded through a combination of district resources and generous community donations. The 544 Education Foundation served as the fiscal host for the project, ensuring that all contributions were directed appropriately.

Upgraded Equipment and Features

The renovation introduced a wide array of new equipment and features, including:

  • Power racks with benches for core lifts
  • Glute-ham machines
  • Lat/pull-down machines
  • 15 ft x 40 ft strip of green turf for speed and agility training
  • New flooring with platform inlays, creating a level surface for easier access and movement
  • New sets of dumbbells
  • Sets of medicine balls, kettlebells, plyo boxes, resistance bands, and 2 sleds for functional training.

These upgrades allow for a variety of training modalities, including sled pushes, band exercises, kettlebell routines, medicine ball drills, and plyometric workouts. The facility's design supports multiple programming options for students and athletes of all levels.

Community Impact and Testimonials

The renovated weight room has already made a positive impact on student-athletes. Notable alumni have shared how access to a well-equipped training facility contributed to their success:

  • Ellie Colbeck, Minnesota Class 2A Player of the Year in 2022, credited the weight room for improving her strength, speed, and agility, enabling her to compete at the next level.
  • Haylie Zenner, a four-time state champion in the 800 meters, emphasized that the weight room was crucial for her success in all sports and set her up for a Division I college athletic career.
  • Ainsley Hansen, a state champion high jumper, highlighted the importance of the weight room in her athletic development, aiding in injury prevention and enhancing her agility and speed.

Keep It Moving

Looking ahead, the Fergus Falls School District plans to expand the fitness offerings to the broader community. The Kennedy Secondary School weight room is now open to the public through the Community Education program, providing access to the upgraded facility for residents seeking to improve their health and fitness.

Fergus Falls High School's investment in its fitness facility underscores a commitment to student-athlete development and community wellness. The upgraded weight room not only enhances athletic performance but also fosters a culture of health and fitness within the community.
